Medical Education & Training

Medical Students

All medical students are now required to spend some of their training in General Practice. This is the recognition of the fact that General Practice is a medical speciality in its own right. We host undergraduate students from Aberdeen University and postgraduate students on the ScotGEM programme run by St Andrews University & Dundee University.

  • Aberdeen University students study a 5 year MBChB programme; we host these students for their 5-week GP block in their 4th year of education.
  • ScotGEM (Scottish Graduate Entry Medicine) is an intensive 4 year MBChB programme run jointly by the University of St Andrews and the University of Dundee.  It is tailored for graduates interested in becoming medical generalists and rural practitioners for NHS Scotland.  It includes a Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship (LIC), this is a core, year long placement in the students 3rd year of the programme. Instead of short hospital rotations, students are embedded in a GP practice across Scotland, actively participating in patient care and following their assigned patients through specialist and hospital treatments.

The teaching here involves observing Drs, Nurses and other Health Care Professionals as well as taking part in joint consultations alongside a Clinician, usually with them seeing the patient first and the Dr then joining them.

In most cases your appointment will be observed by a student – if you prefer the student is NOT present for your consultation then please make Reception aware when you arrive at the Practice. You can also let the Clinician know when they call you from the waiting room.

We very much value your support and involvement with training our future Drs.
