Self-care to help yourself get better more quickly

  • Drink plenty fluids; around 6-8 glasses every day (inc water, decaffeinated and sugar free drinks)
  • Take simple pain relief; paracetamol or ibuprofen at regular intervals if you can
  • cranberry juice or cystitis sachets from the pharmacy can help some women; there is currently little evidence to support their use

In most cases the local pharmacy (Boots, Shore Street) can help you with simple over the counter solutions and in certain cases the Pharmacist can also prescribe antibiotics for you without needing to see a GP.

When self-care isn’t enough?

We advise seeing a GP or Nurse Practitioner if you have a catheter or any of the following symptoms

  • Fever, shivering or flu‑like symptoms
  • Back or flank pain (kidney pain)
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Visible blood in urine
  • Confusion (especially older patients)
  • You feel unwell
